HOW CAN I EARN CREDIT FOR A CLASS WITHOUT TAKING THE FULL CLASS?
TVAH’s procedure for CBE’s for Acceleration and CBE’s for Credit Recovery are as described below.
Exam(s) cost $70 per exam, per semester. If you are taking a full year exam the cost will be $140. This does NOT include the proctor fee for each test.
Students interested in the CBE for credit recovery or acceleration will use Texas Tech or UT as a means for obtaining these credits. The websites are listed here:

CBE TESTING WINDOWS
Students can order and pay for tests on their own at any time during the school year, however, if a student opts to order a credit by exam from TVAH, the student must test during one of the following testing windows.
- August 4-8, 2025: Register by July 31, 2025
- December 3-6, 2025: Register by November 12, 2025
- January 12-15, 2026: Register by December 8, 2025
- May 25-June 4, 2026: Register by May 11, 2026
DESCRIPTION OF CBE EXAMS
CREDIT BY EXAMINATION (WITHOUT PRIOR INSTRUCTION) – ACCELERATION
Credit by Examination (CBE) is available to students who are enrolled in grades K-12 and who are interested in being awarded credit toward high school graduation. The student must not have been previously enrolled in this class. Credit is granted to students who attain eighty percent (80%) or above mastery on the examination for acceleration.
CREDIT BY EXAMINATION (WITH PRIOR INSTRUCTION) – RECOVERY
A student in any grade K-12 may be given credit for an academic subject which he or she has had some prior instruction, if the student scores seventy percent (70%) or above on the examination for the applicable course.
STEPS TO ENROLL
- Student/Parent meets with TVAH Counselor to discuss the CBE he/she wishes to take.
- Student/Parent may choose to go to one of the above listed websites for Texas Tech (TT) or University of Texas (UT) and register for CBE OR they may choose to test during a TVAH testing window and TVAH will order and pay for the exam from UT. An online proctor fee will be required in addition to the CBE cost.
- Student/Parent will pay for the exam(s) if ordering from Texas Tech
- Student/Parent will submit the TVAH Credit By Exam Request Form to notify student’s counselor that they are officially requesting the CBE and have paid for the exam OR are requesting to test during a TVAH testing window. (Please use your TVAH student email address to log in to this form.)
- Student/Parent schedules time to take the test with the online proctor.
- The College (TT or UT) will grade and score the exam(s).
- The College (TT or UT) Student/Parent ordered exams(s) from will send a copy of the scoresheet to the home mailing address provided as well as a copy to TVAH.
